Temporary autonomous zone of reading
Book Fair is a traditional part of Subversive Festival, this year more ambitious than ever before. During the International Conference and Subversive Forum, all our guests will have the opportunity to see and buy books from leading Croatian publishers. Moreover, regular book promotions will be held every day in Kino Europa at 18.00 , when the authors will present their works, all recently translated in Croatian. We decided not to organize standard promotions, but rather invite distinguished intellectuals to interview the authors. Ivana Dragičević (acclaimed Croatian journalist) will be talking to Tariq Ali about his book Obama's Sindrome. Ankica Čakardić (young philosopher and feminist) will be hosting Slavoj Žižek and present the Croatian edition of his book Living in the End of Times for the first time! Stephane Hessel's manifesto Indignez-vous! will be the topic of conversation between Nadežda Čačinovič (distinguished philosopher and feminist), Predrag Matvejević (acclaimed writer) and Marko Pogačar (praised poet). Pogačar will also participate in a discussion about Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States along with Mate Kapović (linguist and activist) and Tihomir Ponoš (writer and journalist). Tonči Valentić (theorist and publicist) and Renata Salecl will introduce her book On Choice. Finally, members of the editorial board of Europski glasnik will review the 16th issue of their voluminous annual journal.
We have no illusions that this Book Fair can stop the current economically driven anti-cultural trends that are slowly transforming books into a kind of luxury inaccessible to public. However, we are neither willing to give in to defeatism and impotent culture-pessimistic lamentations. Hence, we invite you to join us in this temporary autonomous zone of reading, writing and discussing where books will once again be important as they should be!
